* Claudia Schiffer turns 30 Frankfurt, (August 25)
Amongst huge coverage in German media, supermodel Claudia Schiffer
turned 30 today.
In an interview with Stern, Schiffer said she was delighted to turn
30, now lacking the
timidness of when she was 21. She put the age matter aside, saying
that she had worked
hard to build up the Claudia Schiffer brand and that that was unaffected
by age. The
model also said she found it difficult to meet men. Currently dating
British art dealer
Tim Jeffries, Schiffer was once engaged to magician David Copperfield.
Schiffer stated
that her relationship to Copperfield was not designed to boost their
careers and was
appalled by the press's continual 00speculation. A national symbol
in Germany—
arguably with the stature of France's Marianne—Schiffer and compatriot
Boris Becker
recently supported their country's successful bid for the 2006 World
Cup soccer venue.
Schiffer was discovered aged 17 outside a Düsseldorf nightclub and
has been on the
covers of 550 magazines since then.

Finding filth in all the wrong places - article
here
Back in the 1980s, feminism made a big mistake. It
took a loud, noisy stand against
sexual expression. Today, those measures are coming back to haunt
feminists who
only meant for men's magazines to be treated like second-class publications.
A few
weeks ago, the American Decency Association spent US$100,000 on a
New York Times
ad condemning "morals-destroying filth" on the cover of mainstream
women's mags
such as Cosmopolitan and Glamour. |

Behind W, a Square Guy With a Parallax View - article here
Old-fashioned" is not an expression anyone in the
superchic, see-you-later-Charlie
world of fashion magazines would think of applying to Dennis Freedman,
the creative
director of W, who turned an aging uptown broadsheet into a visually
exciting
barometer of the here and now.
As a result, the editorial well of W has emerged
as an important -- maybe the most
important -- creative showcase for photography among American fashion
magazines.
Fabien Baron, a former creative director of Harper's Bazaar whose
cinematic portraits
of writhing models appear in the current issue of W, said: "In Europe
it's Italian Vogue
and in America it's W -- and I would add Vogue, because it's still
the pinnacle of
American fashion. But that's it." In Mr. McCarthy's view, a turning
point came three
years ago when W ran a series of pictures Mr. Weber took of Kate
Moss, Marianne
Faithfull and Stella McCartney. Of course, agreeing to publish Bruce
Weber's
photographs hardly involves mental lifting. What's interesting --
and this says a lot
about why many fashion magazines don't work today -- is that Mr.
Freedman didn't
hesitate when Mr. Weber presented him with the idea, which was along
the lines of
"Let's bring a bunch of English girls together and shoot them."
The fact that W freely publishes images that don't
emphasize or even show clothes is
partly what sets the magazine apart. As he spoke, Mr. Freedman brought
out some
images taken by Mr. di Corcia for the September issue that explored
voyeurism in a
distinctly Park Avenue setting. But as Mr. Freedman knows, his approach
is not novel.
It is, indeed, an old-fashioned one, going back to the early days
of Vogue and Bazaar.
It's just that he now makes the pursuit of good work seem so uncomplicated.

when GQ decided to put her on the cover of its September issue, art
director Tony
Chambers had a problem. No Gisele. Which is where body double Daphna
came in.
"Gisele is one of the most photographed women in the world so we wanted
to do
something different, something iconic," says Chambers, who decided
to commission

instead of the usual photo shoot. |

Vogue editrix Anna Wintour has decreed: long
hair is out, short is in. Any model who
wants to appear on the cover must chop her locks, sources said.
The edict went out a few
months ago, and Wintour was said to have been more than a mite miffed
when one cover-
girl refused to comply for Vogue, but then had her tresses trimmed
for a rival glossy. "We
definitely encourage girls to get their hair cut, but ‘encouraged'
is not ‘forced,'" a Vogue
rep said, adding, "We have a story in our September issue about
bobs [haircuts] being
back in, and everyone got their hair cut for it." - story here
Personally I perfer seeing the models with
long hair. I bet someone commented
of Anna's hair, and it wasn't a compliment which they said. This
is her revenge.

Donna Karan Seeing Red, Again: (Last Updated: Wednesday,
August 9, 2000)
Donna Karan International announced a $7 million
loss in the second quarter.
Donna Karan International's biggest stumbling block remains the
designer's
pay package. Karan essentially licenses her name to the company.
In return, her
private design studio gets a percentage of "sales by the Company,
its affiliates, its
subsidiaries and sublicensees." That earned her Gabrielle Studio
$76 million from 1996
through 1999. Many investors have concluded that her pay package
leaves them last in
line. That is one reason the stock has lost three quarters of its
value since the company
went public at $24 a share in June of 1996. The stock closed at
$6.06 Tuesday, down 25 cents.
