Smartest observation I've heard from someone on the current middle-east/Arab inspired clothes designers have for this season. Why would any Arab woman looking for expensive looking western clothes want to buy something that looks like they can get at the local bazaar?

I still like Tom Ford's spin control, with that whole Afgan Prime Minister chic comment. I still doubt it'll sell much in the end.

Now, does this mean that Niki is so naive or stupid that she could be talked into taking off her clothes and showing her scars? I mean, she's not exactly new to the business, so she really ought to know better".)

+ Afghan chic gets Gucci going
Thisislondon - Tom Ford says, Hamid Karzai, the new Afganistan Prime Minister, "the most chic man on the planet".
(You really have to hand it to Ford. He is so worth whatever Gucci pays him. We all saw last year how lots of fashions this year would have a "Middle east" feel to them. After September 11th, fashion houses all went into spin knowing consumers aren't going to be in the mood wearing, in the eyes of the average consumer, 'the clothing of terrorists'. So they said the same lame spin of "It's about multi-culture!", at the same time every Western nation is under pressure to tighten up immigration.

Ford sees an oppertunity and goes for it, and gets it. He associates it all with the figure head of the "Good guys". Smart guy :-) )

+ Such nice young girls
Daily Telegraph - Not sure how to describe this one? It's less a commentary on Men's mags, as it is on daughters of British upper crest, and the seemingly increasing way to "come out" to the world -- Naked! Take a read on this one.
+ Art, after a fashion
Boston Globe - An article complaining about too much nudity in fashion and not enough clothes
(Personally, I consider mags like Purple, Dutch, Numero, different then ones like Vogue, Bazaar, Elle. Just like I consider ones like, Max, GQ, Arena, different then those. Firstgroup I see as fashion mags. It deals with all ends of it, clothes, models, photographers, though rarely the business side. Next is women fashion mags and last group, men's fashion mags. It's like getting upset at a movie like, Dude Where's my Car?, for not having a plot. C'mon! You must of known going into a movie like that, there wouldn't be a plot.)

+ Armani denounces consumerism and then sells his jeans for £100 (US$145) a pair
Daily Telegraph - The billionaire fashion designer, has condemned consumerism, saying fashion should be, "For the people, not just for those few who can afford the most expensive things".

(The obvious comment would be what Daily Telegraph quickly points out. What a hypocrite. If the guy hates consumerism so much, then why doesn't he donnate all his shares and profit he owns to the State. Or can only Armani handle being a billionaire while everyone else can't. What I call, "Vanguard of the proletariat syndrome"

I'm noticing a bigger trend here. I was ask recently my thought on some fashion book. I never read it but had a hunch what it was about. I looked up the book on Amazon and read its tagline. Same comment on fashion Armani, YSL, and many others in fashion are coming out saying.

It has to do more with politics than fashion. Fashion was (and still very much is) a place were their politics were appreciated. Might sound warm, fuzzy and nice on paper, but in real life, it doesn't work.

Fashion is more organized now. It's more mobile, able to change with the times, thanks to industry. Not thanks to the ideals of the 60s, counter culturalism, "anarchy in the UK", or today's leftist ' in the name of..' activisms, and anti-free markets attitudes.

-- here's a funny article from the National Post about a Libertarian trying to score with just this type of person.

I think we will be hearing much, much more on this topic, throughout this year.

If there's any story about fashion that needs to be talked about. It's this push to use kids in roles more suitable for adults. Lumon of Modelito sums it up with a comment she made on Jeisa: She looks beautiful, but I don´t like the fact that they´re exploiting too much of the 16 year old. All the images I see of her nowadays is showing her boobs.

Even Playboy and Hustler have the self control to wait till its models are 18.

Another thing I really can't stand and I think is ruining fashion at all levels. This patronage, especially to the degree started a few years ago. All these children of politicians, celebrities or British Bluebloods who suddenly are given a free ride. I'll use models for a quick example. Though I could quickly think of one designer too. We all know what is considered to be the typical template for a model. Yet these kids rarely fit it, ever notice that. It's safe to say it's not their genetics but is their last name which is the reason they got the job. Makes me mad since it means; someone else more who should of gotten the job - won't now. Doesn't even matter if they are qualified.)

+ Gap loses cool in sales slump
Thisislondon - On the Gap: 'It's pretty boring, always the same look over and over again.'
+ Where Gap went wrong
Thisislondon - Gap in trouble because the consumer tastes is getting more exclusive (translation: What Grandpa Simpson said).
(GAP still 1998 to GAP while it's 2002 to the rest of the world. They used Smokey Robinson for their Christmas ad champaign for crying out loud! They're STILL using the "hip looking people (to the GAP they are) who are singing or dancing" ad visuals. 14 year old girls that thought it was so cool are now 18. I've written enough comments on GAP throughout 2001. The last on December 31st.

GAP might be a well-known brand name. But is it even considered a "cool" brand name? It's like when people are talking about music and some dork no one wants to join the conversation says the ultimate dumbest band. Now that I think of it; I myself didn't like one choice of musicans they picked for their Christmas ad champaign.

If I was GAP share holder. I would be so mad at them spending goodness knows how much on using those musicians and not on their debt.)

Yves was "it". Now he's not. What is "it", appears alien and scary to him. He can't relate to it. Fashion and the way fashion works has changed. Just like it changed when he was the fresh face. He didn't have any complaints back then.)
