Usenet
(click here to learn more on what it is)
We're all familiar with the web, but the net doesn't stop there.
If you're the type of person who's interested in collecting scans,
MP3s, movies, books, or just discussion; there's another area of
the net you may or may not be familar with - Usenet, also known
as Newsgroups. Many net providers come with newsgroups, along with
email, but lots of the time their usenet service suck. It might
be free but so much is filtered it's not even worth it.
I mention this all cause I know many Fashist! visitors
come to see what's out there. This site mostly deals with what's
out there in the web. There's much more out there and usenet is
just another place for your fashion fix, and much more.
Probably the best and affordable pay Usenet provider
out there is EasyNews,
for just US$10/month. So if you enjoy magazine scans, MP3s,
movies, TV shows, discussion groups of ALL kind, or even programs.
Usenet probably has it and EasyNews
can provide it filter free. Here's some newsgroups to start
you off (there's almost 40, 000 groups. Not all groups are as active
as others. But with free web space at an all time low, there is
usenet. Groups are from all over the world in just about any language.):
+ First off, IMO the best news reader News
Xpress
alt.binaries.pictures.supermodels (fashion mags, models), alt.binaries.photos.nude-art
(photographer books), alt.binaries.tv.shaggable.babes (men's mags
like GQ), alt.binaries.sounds.mp3, alt.binaries.mp3.bootlegs (music),
alt.binaries.multimedia, alt.binaries.movies (movies, TV shows),
alt.fashion (discussion), alt.binaries.fashion.magazines (these
days an empty group), but this is just a quick sample to give you
an idea what's in Usenet.

Victims
National Review - A conservative view of fashion.
(This talks about the same point and example
I made in a Feb 25th comment (bottom of the page). Except it jumps
to conclusions a bit to quick.
I don't like all this USSR fad going
around in European fashion. That's just me, I don't believe in celebrating
tyrannical regimes which millions die under and societies fall behind
others.
The controversy is the controversial
collection done by TataNaka, a label done by twin fashion students
from the former USSR state of Georgia. They actually left Georgia
10 years ago, so it's hard to know if this collection was inspired
by what they knew from their own experiences, being raised in the
USSR and seeing that London's champaign socialists were into communism
and stuff like that. So might of seen a oppertunity. Or, since they
never had to experiance the troubles Russia and the other states
have faced, and continue to from the awful legacy of communism.
Is this collection a political statement? I don't know, and won't
speculate.
As awful as communism and the USSR
are, there was and still a exotic feeling to Eastern Europe. TataNaka
has had successful collection before this controversial collection
which had no political background to it. Cameron Dias has even worn
a jacket designed by them.)

(I guess Vogue is giving in to the complaints
from the minority who complain there aren't enough representation
in its pages of (whatever it is that week). I guess next Football
leagues should include players with prosthetic legs, cause that'd
only be fair and everyone wants it. Especially the 9% who complain
the loudest. If Vogue is looking for a new market of women to attrach.
There's a huge one out there. Though they might need a new editor
who's less interested in having cocktails with Hillary Clinton in
order to connect with it.)

Models on Movies
-by Basilio
Injured Molly
Supermodel Molly Sims debuts as a film actress in
Touchstone Pictures' (Disney) comedy Frank McClusky, C.I.",
in theaters April 26th. This is a 10 mil USD film about an insurance
fraud investigator who goes undercover, written by Mark Perez (debut)
and directed by Arlene Sanford ("I'll be Home for Christmas").
Dave Sheridan stars as the investigator with Dolly Parton as his
overprotective mother. Molly, the MTV House-of-Style hostess and
Sports Illustrated model, appears in a small role as an injured
girl.
Time model
Cuban/British actress/model Sienna Guillory appears
in "Time Machine" as Emma. The 85 mil USD Dreamworks production
is already in theaters worldwide. Based on the 19th century H.G.
Wells sci-fi book, "Time Machine" is co-directed by Simon
Wells, author's great grand son, and Gore Verbinski. Guy Pearce
and song writer Samantha Mumba star. This timemachine.countingdown.com
is the official website. "Time Machine" is Sienna's 12th
film, as she was an actress by the age of 13, before she tried modeling.
Again, this is her first Hollywood major studio film. Later this
year she will also appear as Juliette in Penny Woolcock's "Principles
of Lust".
This isn't Sienna's first film, but should be her
most notable to date, for the 5'6 model turn actress. She's been
a pro actress since 1988 (when she was 13). Her father, a guitarist
who played with legends like Donovan or the Stones, knew lots of
people in the industry and this opened many doors for Sienna. Time
Machine is probably her 10th film or so. Here is Sienna Guilroy
from Model
Mania.

+ Marzotto
May Have Already Sealed Deal to Acquire Valentino
Pagesix/FWD - Italian textiles and clothing group
Marzotto is working out the final details to acquire the Valentino
label. Marzotto is likely to pay no more than about $220 million
for the acquisition, including some $165 million in Valentino debt.
Valentino is expected to have posted sales of about $113 million
in 2001, but is still in the red at an operating level.
(I find it interesting how strong
a brand name some designers have. Seems like many who survived the
90s are getting a big pay off, both in money and longevity for their
label. At some point the serious question of: Is this really a label
which has longevity all over it?)
+ LVMH
Posts Stunning 99 Percent Drop in 2001 Net Profit

+ Galliano
sticks to well worn themes
Guardian Unlimited - Galliano at Christian Dior with
a successful showing
(Dior's collection is coolest again. Some
signs of Galliano's visit to Russia are noticable. Strange how so
few reporters notice this. I can image his next collection will
be huge in Russian influence. As reported in a past Russian L'Officiel
on Galliano's visit to St.Petersburg. He visited boutiques of designers
Tatiana Parfionova, Lilia Kislenko, Irina Tantsurina. Big amount
of time Galliano dedicated to studying collections of Ethnography
Museum and Russian Museum. Most curious to Galliano were the antique
shops. He did shopping in three shops, wich specialization is antique
clothes.
Twice he visited one shop, Sokrovisha
Petersbourgha, where he took lots of photos. He bought a blue calico
sarafan with jacket, two pillow-cases decorated with stitches, and
costum of Bryansky (i.e. Bryansk is russian town) Uyezd (uyezd is
synonym of "district") peasent woman, costum includes
rich decorated home-weaven skirt and shirt with lace on the mouth
and embroidered sleeves.
At Garmoniya, Galliano bought a
male frock-coat, a emboidered shirt, and a crepe de Chaine dancing
dress. Staraya Kniga, he also visited twice. Where he bought more
peasent looking, children, and embroidered clothing. He also got
a bunch of Russian woman's magazines with patterns from the beggining
of 20th century.
With CCCP inspired images and clothing
for some European fashion circles and the more counter-cultured
fads. Even Adidas is selling USSR shirt. Don't be surprised to see
in the mainstream fashion more Russian inspired clothes.)

Can James overcome the stigma?
Ex supermodel James King fights hard to overcome the
MTA stigma. The Omaha girl stars in three movies this year, following
up her success as Nurse Betty in "Pearl Harbor":
- "Slackers", a comedy on college students, is already
in theaters. James is Angela, the girl all students dream of. The
film is written by David Steinberg (story for "American Pie 2")
and directed by former fashion photographer Dewey Nicks (film debut).
"Slackers" don't sound like a good bet; the reception was
as bad as it gets: "A turn off" (L.A. Times), "twaddle"
(Rolling Stone), "discordant" (S.F. Chronicle), "painfully
bad" (Chicago Tribune), "thus far the worst movie of 2002"
(Atlanta Journal). There is an official website here.
- "Lone Star State of Mind", written by Trevor Munson
(writing debut), will be released at April 12. James is a small town
girl from Texas, who's dream of moving to L.A. with her sweetheart
(played by Joshua Jackson) lands on hot water. David Semel, director
for tv hits "Beverly Hills 90210", "Buffy the Vampire
Slayer" and "Dawson's Creek", makes his film debut.
- Comic based "Bulletproof Monk", the adventurous
story of an immortal Tibetan kung fu master, is written by Ethan Reiff
and Cyrus Voris ("Josh Kirby", "Demon Knight")
and directed by Paul Hunter ("The Wizard of Oz" with Snoop
Doggy Dogg). James is a Russian Princess. The filming begins this
weekend in Toronto. "Bulletproof Monk" will be released
late this year or early in 2003. |

Norwegian model stars in "Terminator 3"
22 year old model Kristanna Loken (3rd place at
the 1994 Elite Look of the Year contest) stars in "Terminator
3", next to Arnold Schwarzenegger. This is the first major studio
film for the Norwegian model who never made it to the very top of
the fashion industry. Kristanna's name was revealed only last week.
She was selected among thousands of candidates for the leading "T-3"
female role, this of a sophisticated killer cyborg. The filming begins
in April with a rumoured budget of more than 170 mil USD and Jonathan
Mostow ("U-571") replacing James Cameron as director. "Terminator
3" will be released in 2003. |
